Learning objectives
By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

Recall and apply knowledge from Element 8 from last academic year to explain key observational methods. (K3.4) (Link to assignment 3).

Introduced to the new EYFS updated (1st November 2024 release)

Engage in enhanced research in small groups, you will comprehend your findings on the padlet break out rooms.

Work on the start of the project 3 - linking their observations from placement to Development Matters 2023.

Starter (Recall & connect)
K3.4
Last academic year in Element 8, with Dawn you learnt a range of observational methods.

We recapped this in session 2 of this performance outcome.

Without looking at your notes, work together to mind map the different forms of observations that are used in early years.
It would be advised to consider formative and summative assessments.

We will then engage in group feedback on the board and collaborate ideas.

Extension:
Understanding observations and forms of assessment are imperative for the successful completion of assignment 3 (all 3 parts of the assessment).

Can we recall what month assignment 3 will take place?
In line with this assessment how many observations will you need to complete?
Who will store these observations for you in your placement?
Who will collect your observations from your placement & why?

Padlet research task:
On google classroom, there are 4 padlet links.
You will work in groups to read and comprehend key information from academic early years websites to analyse the importance of observations in Early Years.

On padlet I would like you to read the information on the source you have been provided and clearly document your findings in your own words.

Why do we observe and why is important?
According to Birth to 5 Matters (2021) some of the main reasons early years educators are required to do observations are:
Formative assessment opportunities should be a natural occurrence in your practice.
The interests of the child should be naturally embedded in your practice to enhance engagement.
Creates a stimulating and responsive approach for the children you are planning for.
Informs summative assessments and provides detail information to who may require this.

EYFS 2024 (Effective from 1st November 2024)
The EYFS has now been reviewed and a new version of the EYFS will be effective from the 1st November 2024 for all OFSTED registered early years providers.

There are now improved outcomes for children aged 4 - 5 years, particularly in language and literacy.

There is now a further emphasis on the reduction of unnecessary paperwork, to allow you to provide a more child centered practice.

Students and apprentices can now count towards staff:ratio's provided the are deemed to be competent, this is with the intent to support staffing challenges in Early Years.

Safeguarding requirements have been updated to consider more modern technology.

Why is this important information for you as T level students working in industry placement?

Project based learning 3
For all of your performance outcomes this year, we are aware there are attached skills based criteria.
(S3.10 - The student must be able to use formal and informal monitoring and observation techniques.)

Last few weeks you have been completing 3 observations (as practice for your
 assignment 3).

Spend the allocated time accessing the table on google classroom, under PO3.
In the first column you will identify your observation method.
You will then clearly link to Development Matters 2023.
You will now justify your links to Development Matters 2023 and explain how the child you
observed is working towards their expected milestones or have achieved specific milestones.
